De ELT wordt automatisch geactiveerd tijdens een crash en zendt de standaard swept-toon uit op 121,5 en 243,0 MHz. Elke 50 seconden gedurende 520 milliseconden (long message protocol) wordt de 406 MHz-zender ingeschakeld en zendt een gecodeerd digitaal bericht uit naar het Cospas\/Sarsat-satellietsysteem. De ELT kan worden geprogrammeerd met het 24-bits adres van het vliegtuig en met breedtegraad-\/lengtegraadinformatie van het navigatiesysteem van het vliegtuig wanneer deze wordt gebruikt met de Artex ELT \/NAV Interface -B (P\/N 453-6501). De B406-4 is ontworpen om te communiceren met Boeing&#8217;s Master Caution System in combinatie met het op de DZUS gemonteerde cockpit-afstandsbedieningspaneel.
