What happened?

Hiking in the former Bears Ears National Monument (more specifically, Utah’s Grand Gulch) with group of friends. One of our group stumbled and found that she couldn’t put any weight on her right foot. We were in a deep canyon, about 7 miles from the trailhead. We thought about carrying her out, but dismissed that because of our full packs, survivor’s weight, and distance involved.

Activated PLB and waited. Had 2 PLBs among the group, and had seen a film at the ranger station the day before about unnecessary activations. So activated the second PLB with the thought that nobody would consider 2 PLBs a false alarm.

Also sent 3 hikers back towards the trail head for help, with two others waiting with survivor.

2 hours later, helicopter arrived and carried survivor to hospital in Moab. Broken fibula in right leg, torn ligaments in left leg.

Words of wisdom

Carry a PLB. And be in a place where the rescuers can find you. Our rescuers did not use the 121 MHz homing beacon to find us.

Thank you note

Great product as part of great rescue system.
